Mountain Bike the Coppermine Rocks-Hackett Track

Mountain Bike the Coppermine Rocks-Hackett Track

Nelson has some of New Zealand's best weather, and is located next to stunning ocean beaches, bush and mountain country. Nelson is a top mountain biking destination because of the diversity of the terrain, and the amount of local tracks. Why not strap your bike to the back of your car and head to Nelson for an adrenaline pumping weekend of pedaling.
The Queen Charlotte Walkway is a well-known track as it borders Queen Charlotte Sound, and takes two to three days to complete. This track is perfect for checking out the beautiful scenery, with lots of stunning lookout spots.
Pick a track that suits your needs, as there is something for everyone with numerous local tracks that vary in length and difficulty. There are stream crossings, tussock landscape, tricky root sections, narrow technical ridges, downhill runs, and uphill climbs to satisfy all cravings. If you're after a full day marathon, there's the Coppermine-Rocks-Hackett track that takes 8-12 hours. The Coppermine track is for confident riders only, as it crosses many tricky rocky sections, and steep climbs where you may have to carry your bike in sections. A technical single track crosses the undulating Black Diamond Ridge and through the mineral belt to Coppermine Saddle. Much of the track is amongst tussock shrubs, rocky mountains and red beech forest. The Coppermine Epic bike race also uses the track annually.
For the more timid, there are plenty of gravel road tracks, and novice 1-2 hour rides in the Nelson area, which make up a more scenic and less strenuous traverse, such as the Clover knob and Fireball tracks.
